In the run up to Christmas I was starting to spend more time on a short stretch below a weir pool, there were enough swims for short sessions while the days were getting shorter. It also gave me somewhere to go if the upstream stretch was not producing. Although I was not catching big chub, the odd 5lb+ fish kept me interested. Another bonus to this stretch was that if that did not fish, I was able to go downstream on another club book giving me plenty of river to go at.
December also saw me spend a bit more time after the perch I had a few over 1lb and two over 2lb. The fishing was good that month.
Back on the chub hunt in late December, I was out for a morning session on the ‘short’ stretch. I baited a few swims and was now fishing them in turn. I was set up in a swim I’d started in first where I missed a bite, this time I was going to upstream it. It was a tricky cast, but by my second attempt it landed where I wanted the bait to be. It could not have been in the water long before there was a tiny tremor on the quiver, I was poised ready when the tip flew round, fish on! It did it’s utmost to do me in the snags I was fishing to and after a short battle my friend, who had popped down to say hello, did the honours with the net. Scales were set and a reading of 5lb 15oz was recorded. I packed up after that and went home for a nice lunch.
