A hidden gem

The ‘hidden gem’ in summer

I first fished this little side stream in 2011. This is the only place that’s fishable in its entire length, as it splits from the main river looping around the back of a large field before rejoining the main river below a weir pool. In the winter it comes into its own, becoming a place where many species take refuge from the stronger winter currents. It is a lovely place to fish when days are at their shortest, usually bites are easy to come by unless it is really coloured.

I’ve had some lovely nets of fish during winter when I thought there wasn’t a fish in the main river! Using the pole or stick float on a short rod with maggot or bread punch over hemp/ground bait. Switching to corn caught the odd small chub, with worm catching rogue trout or greedy perch that followed the shoal fish in.
